Hey friends, I’ve got a quick one for you today as my family and I are on the mend in Orlando from Hurricane Milton. But this isn’t about me—it’s about Asheville, a place near and dear to my heart, which recently took a brutal hit from Hurricane Helene.

Asheville is like a second home to me. My grandparents had a cabin in the area, and every summer as a kid, I’d head to the Smoky Mountains, breathing in that crisp Carolina air. These days, I take my own family there, and we were just visiting a few weeks before Hurricane Helene tore through on September 27th.

Helene bulldozed through the Carolinas, with hundreds of lives lost and whole towns disappearing under water. Asheville wasn’t spared, slammed with an apocalyptic flood. Homes floated away in rivers that didn’t previously exist, waterlines were wrecked, and the area was left without the infrastructure to handle such devastation.

Tens of thousands are still without clean water, and Helene is now the third deadliest storm the U.S. has seen this century.

Cardinals at the Window—named after an Appalachian phrase that hints luck is on the way—is a jaw-dropping 136-song compilation of riches, featuring unreleased songs, live sets, covers, and demos from some of the biggest names in indie, rock, and Americana, including The War on Drugs, R.E.M., Fleet Foxes, Waxahatchee, Phish, King Gizzard, and more.

Put together by Libby Rodenbough, David Walker, and Grayson Haver Currin—all with roots in Western North Carolina—all proceeds go to three local organizations helping those hit hardest by the disaster: Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR), the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, and BeLoved Asheville. 

The tracklist is stacked, including Asheville favorites like MJ Lenderman, Karly Hatzman (Wednesday), Indigo De Souza, and Angel Olsen. You’ll also hear from other killer North Carolinians like Sluice, Rosali, and Dead Tongues.
