For the uninitiated: every season, yours truly refreshes the PATIO GROOVES playlist with whatever’s been in heavy rotation around here.
And with fall creeping in, we’ve arrived at my favorite time of year. The first cool morning. Football on TV. That weird back-to-school feeling that apparently never goes away. This is peak patio season, when sitting outside with a drink turns into thinking about where the hell the last 20 years went.
I tried to bottle that feeling into this mix. 33⅓ songs spread across six decades, full of hazy memories and the general rude passage of time.
It starts, appropriately enough, with Dolly Parton singing, “Back through the years I go wanderin’ once again, back to the seasons of my youth” on “Coat of Many Colors.” That slides directly into Harlem Shakes singing, “I got a coat of many colors, sold it off online…” And we’re off and running.
As always, about half the playlist comes from this year, with new favorites from Wild Pink, Squirrel Flower, Alabama Shakes and plenty more. There are some names you might not know yet, including Small Pond, Dogwood Tales, and Idle County, that I’m excited for you to hear.
